Background
This was the first programme established in 2001 with four home-based carers.
Currently there are eleven staff members in the programme employment
Services rendered
- Home Nursing and T.B. DoT(Direct observed Treatment)
- Awareness campaigns e.g. door-to-door, HIV and AIDS education
- Social and spiritual counselling
Success Stories
- Lucy Malapile, one of our old Home Based Carers, attests that they have travelled a long way to where they are.
She says when they started working in the community it was never smooth sailing.HIV stigma was high; they were scorned and at times chased away from some homes as people feared to be found out about their HIV status.
It took five years of hard work in community HIV/AIDS education, Awareness Campaign, Door-To-Door campaigns and Candle light events to finally break the silence on Aids. They are now warmly received by the very people who rejected them before.
- Team leaders-Louisa Makeleni and Evelyn Lethuba are humbled by the way people’s lives get transformed from being helpless and hopeless to being on their feet and taking charge of their lives again, e.g. one of our former patient Ms Esther Radzilane is now a proud home-based carer and an envy of her neighbourhood.
Challenges
The radius carers have to cover has grown and they walk long distances to cover their patients.
Their salaries are below living standards and cannot cover their basic needs. |
